Crossing Australia
in a hatchback fully loaded.
15.01.2006
Well this entry is a little late, I finished my trip across Australia, Perth to Cairns in 10 days, on the 12th of Dec... rather slack of me really.
The trip went well with no major problems just one small tyre problem that raised its ugly head conveniently in Port Augusta.
The roads across Australia are fantastic, making the trip really easy... well the roads up to the Queensland border were fantastic... the roads from Qld border to Mt Isa are little more than a goat track... so much for it being a major highway. Unfortunately I didn't get any photos of this 'goat track' of a highway...way to hazardous to ones health to get off the road, my little car would have been buried in mud half way up the door if I ventured off the 'road'.

The VERY straight Nullabour Road
It was blistering hot all the way across... thank god for icy air-conditioning!! Camping in the 38-42 degree heat is an experience in itself, no breeze and the heat makes for a very uncomfortable nights sleep. In Coober Pedy we couldn't find a place to camp, thankfully...due not being able to bang the tent pegs into the ground, we stayed in an underground backpackers... highly recommended. At a cool 25 deg at 6 metres down, it made for a great nights sleep.

The Great Aussie Bight
Ayers Rock was amazing... if you could get over the price of the entry $25 per person! After polishing off a bottle of wine, watched the sun set over the rock and see the colour changes... pretty cool, well it was actually hot, but the wine was cool!

A sign of the times
The biggest surprise at the end of the trip was how much stuff I had actually stuffed into my car. I didn't realise it till I got home and pulled it all out and had it in one pile. The photos don't do it justice.

The contents of my poor little car!!
Well I am days out from heading to Peru, the start out my overseas travels... stay tuned...
